Everyone who is business sets goals, but personal goals are an entirely different thing. I’m not normally a New Year’s resolution person. I don’t make lists for all the things I plan to accomplish in the new year like the typical lose weight or spend less money, work out more, yadda yadda yadda.
This year is different. A major event in our lives is affecting our urgency. I’m sure you may have had one of those things that makes you change your perspective of your future.
In other words, most people won’t change their lives until they discover a good reason to do it….in other words, you must find your WHY!
Our Life Changing Event
My husband is a government contractor. That means he works for a company that has a contract with the federal government. Politics aside, the government shut down affects his job.
Four years ago, during the last government shut down, my husband was laid off with zero pay for almost three weeks. This meant he had to wait a week before receving for unemployment benefits. Because they ended the shut down after 16 days, he only received one week of unemployment pay because they don’t pay a partial week.
This time while anticipating the shut down, we found out we were going to be more fortunate. The contract his employer had was paid for through March 2018. Some contracts are paid for ahead of time, so contractors are not laid off if the signed contract with the government is prepaid. Of course, this isn’t covered in the media and not all contracts get paid this way. However, his employer didn’t share this notice until Friday afternoon, hour before the shut down appeared unavoidable.
This became our AHA moment.
AHA – This is our WHY!
After going through this emotionally exhaustive experience AGAIN, we have decided this is the year everything changes. Understanding that as a government contractor, you have very little control over your employment when dealing with the government these days, this is the last time.
2018 will be the year that we take complete charge of our future.
I’ve been fortunate in that we’ve been able to be comfortable on my husband’s salary with me working online part time. However, that’s all going to change.
The current contract my husband is working under expires the end of March. That means new negotiations to extend the existing contract or write a new one for another few years. Having gone through this four years ago, we’ve decided to forego this exhausting and frustrating experience.
This year when his contract ends, he’s resigning from his current position.
The New Plan
Now we MUST earn a full time living all on our own. Like many others out there, we want to be location independent and be able to earn our living no matter where we are. This is how we’re going to do it.
I have a number of irons ready to go in the fire. Will they all succeed? I doubt it. But I can’t just put all my energy into one and hope it succeeds. So follow along to see what works and what doesn’t.
Iron #1: This blog will become more focused and enhanced. You can track our trials, tribulations, what is working and what isn’t on this blog. We’ll share what we’re doing, what products and services we’re using and which ones are worth our and maybe your time.
Iron #2: We are opening two online shopping stores hosted on Shopify. Yes, you read that right…TWO stores. No, I’m not sharing which stores those are yet. Both stores will start out with dropshipped products and eventually offer products we develop as well. Additionally, each store will have a blog to talk about the products, offer reviews and help people solve their problems.
Iron #3: We will be selling our stuff online. Knowing we will still have bills to pay while we make our new life online, we have to have a way to cover our expenses. Call it a side gig or a back up plan, but this is how we’re going to do it.
Some of This Will Be Easier
We used to own a powersports business that specialized in parts and service for jet skis (personal watercraft), motorcycles, snowmobiles and ATVs. We still have a ton of parts and vehicles left from this business. These will be sold using eBay and other online market places like Facebook’s Marketplace, Letgo, and Craigslist. Since I have been doing this part time over the last few years, this is the easiest part of the process or the easiest Iron to manage because I already know how to do this.
Yes, we have a lot going on. I don’t know about you, but we work best under pressure and with deadlines. Our first deadline is March 31, 2018. Because of the way he gets paid, his last full paycheck will be on April 10th and his final check will follow shortly or be on April 25th.
Let’s Get Started
Knowing that March 31, 2018 will be here before we know it, its time to get started.
The next few days will be making sure that our eBay store is full of items for sale. This will involve photos, descriptions, and listing these items. Our next article will entail how I list items on eBay.
This is exciting and nerve racking all at the same time. I hope this inspires you to choose your destiny and find your why.
