OK, you caught me. I use Twitter for fun, information, discounts and of course to market this blog.
However, I also run another business to help people get their business noticed on Twitter called Tweet For Biz. Yes, that was a shameless plug, but this is for one reason. I believe using Twitter is important.
Don’t get me wrong. Twitter is great fun to use. Just think of all the trending topics Jimmy Fallon and The Tonight Show manage to start.
What is a Trending Topic on Twitter?
A Trending Topic is something preceded by a hashtag or pound sign like this #. We always called them pound signs until they became popular with social media.
People use hashtags to give someone something to search for. In other words, if I just tweet about eggs, you may or may not be able to find it. But if I want to tweet about a great recipe for scrambled eggs, all I have to do is type #scrambledeggs and you’ll find all the tweets people have written about scrambled eggs.
Then you’ll find me. And the more people who love and tweet about #scrambledeggs, the more popular a hashtag become and suddenly its trending, meaning lots of people are tweeting about it.
Why Is Twitter Important?
Twitter can be a bit daunting. Once you subscribe to a few people, meaning you follow their tweets, you will quickly be overwhelmed on how fast they go by. Before you know it, there are another 100 tweets for you to view. Yeah, 100 or 200 or more. WOW!
I will admit that I just couldn’t deal the first few times I used Twitter. How in the world do you keep up? I don’t understand how to find anything? Will this really help me get noticed? Does anyone really read what I’m tweeting?
Guess what. They are. Twitter is the SECOND most popular social network after Facebook. Yes, you read it right, Twitter is Second. I know there is lots of chatter these days about Instagram, Snapchat, and Pinterest. I actually use Instagram and Pinterest as well though I’m not a huge fan of Snapchat for my purpose.
But when I’m working on promoting my other business, I choose Twitter before Facebook. Okay, now I’m sure you want to know why.
Why I Choose Twitter over Facebook to Market My Online Business
I use Twitter to market my business for a few reasons:
- Its easier to gain followers, much harder on Facebook
- Frequently posting up to 40, 50 even 60 times a day will get you noticed more, not necessarily so on Facebook
- If you follow someone on Twitter, if they’re not a huge business like Google or a really famous person like Oprah, they’ll likely follow you back
- When you follow other people, your tweets are more likely to be seen by the people that follow them, thus giving you more followers – try that on Facebook
- You’ll know within a day if something you’ve posted has gone viral, meaning everyone is sharing it
- People often check their Twitter feeds several times a day, just like Instagram and Facebook
- People are 72% more likely to do business with a small business they follow on Twitter
These are just a few of the reasons I use Twitter. I also believe Twitter is important for anyone trying to make money online.
Why Am I Telling You This?
Hopefully many of you are thinking about working online. This means you need to have your message seen.
Whether you’re planning on being a blogger, writer, virtual assistant, customer service rep or selling things online, you need to let people know you are out there.
So when you’re deciding on how to work online, consider how you’ll get customers. Social media is now an integral part of any one’s business and getting noticed. No longer do you sit in your office or your store and hope someone will pass by and decide to walk in.
You don’t have to put up an ad in the Yellow Pages and hope your ad is more attractive than the next guy who has a bigger budget for a flashier ad than you do.
You can make your own noise and get yourself noticed and it can be anywhere from FREE to very little money.
No, there are no affiliate links in this article. There are lots of things to do when promoting a blog or store or consulting business or what ever you’re doing to make money online. I have one piece of advice for you.
That’s it. Just start! You don’t have to know how to do everything at the beginning. You just have to start. Solve one problem then the next. Before you know it, you’ll be a success.
Now go out there and START.
